Yurunga is a single storey brick & stone residence with a wide encircling cast iron verandah, patterned slate roof and extensive cellars. It was erected in 1909-10 for A G Cust, the son of a Wimmera pioneer. He owned a property east of town where he bred sheep and draught horses. The house, of unknown design, is an eclectic fusion of Victorian Italianate planning concepts with contemporary Edwardian era interior finishes.
Yurunga is representative of a distinctive Wimmera/Mallee region building style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The combination of limestone and brick is characteristic of 1880's building techniques in South Australia near the Victorian border and Yurunga is the finest example in the Rainbow district.
The house is most notable for the excellent quality of the fittings and finishes which include Wunderlich pressed metal ceilings and Edwardian tiles and stained glass.
Yurunga is complete with external coach house, grooms' quarters and stables is intact.
The house has been acquired by the Shire of Dimboola (now Hindmarsh Shire) and retained as a museum piece.
