Statement of Significance

Built 1879 by Messrs Lewis and Roberts.Replaced a smaller PO built in 1861. The building of a much larger edifice is indicative of the rapid expansion of the town. The population peaked in the 1870's as a result of deep-lead mining and the coming of the railway in 1874.

The building is of signifance as a well-executed example of public Renaissance Revival design; as an indicator of the prosperioty of the Clunes goldfields area and a key element in the historic township of Clunes.
