Statement of Significance

Geelong Post Office constructed between 1889 and 1891 to the design of Public Works Department architect, John H Marsden, is of State architectural and historical significance as a largely intact example of a late Victorian Italianate Post Office. The substantial, richly decorated asymmetrically alinged corner tower, which recalls the Melbourne General Post Office, is a prominent feature in Geelong's commercial centre. This building has played an important role in the social and commercial development of Geelong, Victoria's second city.
