Statement of Significance

Coryule was erected in 1849 for pioneer squatting partners, the Misses Drysdale and Newcomb, to a picturesque Gothic Revival design prepared by pioneer colonial architect/surveyor Charles Laing. This early mansion is constructed of locally quarried sandstones, with patent metal roofing, decorated loopy timber barges, towering chimneys, bay windows and attic dormers.
Coryule is one of the finest and earliest of the picturesque Gothic Revival style homesteads in Victoria. It is undoubtedly the most distinctive work of the celebrated colonial architect Charles Laing prior to 1851. This asymmetrical plan mansion with unusual entry hall and stair-case has few counterparts in Australia. The partnership of zealous women squatters Drysdale and Newcomb is of paramount significance to the history of pastoral enterprise in Australia.
Coryule is being restored and is virtually intact. The deteriorating stonework is being repaired accurately.
