Statement of Significance

The corner site of the London Inn, with a frontage to Bentinck and Julia Streets was purchased by S G Henty in October 1840. Between 1842 and 1846 Henty erected a small stone store which was licensed as the London Inn in 1847. In the early 1850s, and prior to December 1853, the structure was considerably extended by the addition of a second storey and alterations to the facade. The architect for this colonial Georgian style inn is unrecorded.
The London Inn corner has been, since the first years of settlement, a favourite meeting place in Portland. The inn is one of Portland's oldest buildings and landmarks in the town. This rendered brick structure is a surprisingly intact example of an early colonial Georgian style inn in Victoria. The structure, which was later further extended by addition of the Assemmbly Rooms in Julia Street, has significant historical associations with early Portland. Portland Municipal Council held their first meeting at the London Inn on 5th. February, 1856.
