Omeo Post Office is an outstanding example of small post office design in Victoria. It was constructed in 1890 to designs prepared by the Public Works Department. The drawings were executed by A J MacDonald and authorised by J T Kelleher.
The building adopts an eclectic Romanesque Revival style and comes early in a series of comparable designs emanating from the P.W.D. This style reflects contemporary ideals of Australian nationalism as well as exhibiting influences from then current architectural trends in England and the United States.
The building is finely composed. The main facade comprising a pair of arches surmounted by a gable is derived from Barfreston Church, Kent. This composition is flanked by piers capped with domes. The lettering to the gable and the coat-of-arms located in the spandrel between the arches are notable decorative features.
Several interesting original internal elements survive, most notably the pair of arches framing the main counter.
