Statement of Significance

A mechanics' institute of great pretension built in 1889 to the design of Harry Browse Gibbs and sympathetically extended in 1913, possibly by A F Kraemer, the dramatic effect of the original facade being achieved by the use of heavily rusticated pilasters or engaged piers.
