Statement of Significance

Moira House was erected in 1878 by George Sharpe for himself. It is now occupied by the Benalla Club. The two storey brick structure has rendered facades and a two storey cast iron verandah across the main facade. The front entrance is centrally located within this five bay facade and is expressed on the verandah by a two storey pedimented projection. The simple hipped slate roof is crowned by finials.
This is a typical Italianate style house. It is typically composed and well constructed. The two storey main facade has had few alterations. The two storey cast iron verandah is notable. The house is a distinctive feature of Benalla and within this town is unusually large in size. It is prominently located beside the lake and surrounded by a fine picket fence.
There have been extensive alterations to the side and rear of the building; the latter have masked the original rear facade. There have also been several internal alterations.
