Built by the famous pioneer , Dr Daniel Curdie, MA,MD, JP who took up the property with this nephew, Daniel Mackinnon on October 8, 1840, an area of 27,686 acres. Dr Curdie was the first president of the Shire of Hampden and in his early years here combined the practice of his profession with pastoral pursuits - the first medical practitioner in the district. Possessed of high scholarly attainments, with academic tastes, his company was much sought after by intellectuals of the period. He was a keen student of natural history, and a ever-welcome guest at Tandarrok was Baron von Muller, designer of Melbourne's Botanic Gardens.
