Statement of Significance

Marida Yallock was taken up by Stephen Ewen in 1840. In 1854 Daniel MacKinnon, pioneer Scots settler, acquired the lease and constructed the first section of the present homestead complex in a severe Scottish vernacular design. In the mid 1860s and 1870s the homestead was extended with construction of the central single storey block and north wing in an unusual Colonial vernacular design of harled bluestone construction.
Marida Yallick homestead is a comparatively rare and restrained design, progressively developed, and of distinct Scottish vernacular origins. The station run, controversially established on part of the Glenormiston run in 1840, has been continuously occupied by descendants of the pioneer settler and distinguished public figure Daniel MacKinnon since 1853. The property is one of the most famous sheep breeding properties in Victoria and the home of Marida Yallock shorthorns.
Marida Yallock homestead and outbuildings have been maintained and preserved essentially in the late 19th century condition. The garden is mostly intact and a notable enhancement.
