Statement of Significance

Station Statement of Significance:
The station building at Birregurra was constructed in 1877 for the Victorian Railways Department. It features polychromatic brickwork walls and chimneys with a bracketted cornice made from slate flagging. In common with other stations of the day, it includes a residence for the station master and a bellcast iron verandah along the platform elevation. It was extended in 1879 to include a booking lobby and a separate ladies' toilet. Thus, Burregurra is an example of an unusual station plan which has been modified. It is of special interest in the development of station buildings.

Water Tower Statement of Significance:
The Birregurra railway water tower has engineering significance and is historically important at the State level as one of only 5 instillations of its type closely associated with a historic station building. These are Ballan, Coleraine, Healesville, Sunbury and Birregurra. It has regional importance as the most substantial reminder of the former branch railway to Forrest (1891-1975), forming part of the locomotive servicing infrastructure established there to handle traffic (including Lorne passenger traffic) generated by this railway. It is a substantially intact example of a very common water tower design of its period and is important, also for its design refinement, rendering it suitable for use at important locations.
