Statement of Significance

The buildings were completed in 1892 at a cost of 21,984 pounds. Seventeen bays each 23' wide; the clock tower was installed in 1914; the tiled floor was done by Cawkwell's of Malvern (other examples of this firm's work can be found in many churches throughout Melbourne, Parliament House, Stonnington, and the V.R. Administrative Offices). In 1874 the rail arrived from Castlemaine and linked two towns of unlimited potential. The station is outstanding among Victorian railway stations, ranking second only to Flinders Street station in size and architecture. Mark Twain facetiously described Maryborough as "a station with a town attached".
