Statuary Pavilion, Botanical Gardens, Ballarat, was erected in 1887 to designs by T E Molloy to house a collection of statues donated to the city by J R Thompson. A rectangular octagon in plan, the glass-walled structure has a convex roof and octagonal lantern and dome. The entrance faces are pedimented. Construction is on a bluestone plinth with iron framing members and timber window and door frames. The statues and internal fittings remain.
Statuary Pavilion is a unique structure of singular importance architecturally in the townscape and history of Ballarat and in the history and development of permanent public expositions of art and taste in art. The pavilion appears to be totally intact, complete with its exhibits, rendering it probably unique in Australia. Architecturally the structure is most important in terms of design, detailing and techniques of construction.
Statuary Pavilion is intact and in good condition.
