Statement of Significance

A hotel of the same name and on the same site was built about 1864 by Thomas Mitchell. Mitchell had earlier opened the Echuca Hotel but by 1864 had retired from being a hotelier and had branched into investing in land, shops and hotels in the town. The lease passed through several hands and was extended with the addition of the second storey by the 1870's. In 1912 it became the Working Men's Club. Later it passed into private hands and became a residence before being restored to being a hotel once more. First Classified 16/1/64
