A three-storey Victorian Hotel of 1860 to 1890 with prominent octagonal tower, occupying the site of Ballarat's first licensed house; extensively renovated in 1901 including relocation of main staircase and addition of portico; associated over the years with a succession of distinguished visitors, and the site of many meetings significant to the history of the district.Classified: 09/11/1972
