Statement of Significance

The bridge is historically inportant, having been designed by John Monash, and built in 1909 by the Reinforced Concrete and Monier Pipe Construction Company. Its length of 121.3 metres, comprised of ten 12.2 metre spans, was long for its time. Until 1987 it carried a major Highway, the Hume, across the Broken River. The same concrete girder structural form and design was employed when the bridge was widened in 1936. The bridge is still in service. The bridge has an exceptionally high townscape value. It links the Eastern and Western halves of Benalla. It is prominently located adjacent to the town centre and in the heart of Benalla's extensive park, recreation and cultural facilities. Its distinctive profile is exposed to the park, social centre, art gallery, municipal offices and other public buildings which are located on the banks of the river. It is an historical landmark in this most attractive precinct.
