Statement of Significance

Church Statement of Significance: A very fine brick church designed by Leonard Terry and built in three stages: 1864-65, 1869-70, and 1884, the later designed by Terry and Oakden. The building is of particular interest for its magnificent west window with elaborate curvilinear tracery, apsidal chancel, with single-light windows placed beneath small gables, and a substantially intact Fincham and Hobday organ of 1891 with a large case facing down the south aisle.

Organ Statement of Significance: A two-manual organ of 18 stops built in 1891 by Fincham & Hobday and remaining largely unaltered apart from the substitution of a Flute 4 on the Swell Organ for a Mixture in the 1920s and alterations to the stop and pedal actions in the 1970s. The instrument is of particular note for its twin cases: one facing into the chancel, and a larger one with three towers and gilt pipes facing down the south aisle.
