Statement of Significance

Ararat Gaol was commenced in 1859 to the designs of the Public Works Department of Victoria and completed circa 1862. The two-storeyed blocks are located about the central arched gateway, which has prominent detailing in masonry. The two storey buildings are symmetrical and have hipped roofs. There are high walls with conical roofed towers.
Ararat Gaol) is an example of the typical design form developed by the Public Works Department of Victoria for Gaols, each though in various materials. The Ararat Gaol is a landmark in the city and has played a strong role in its history and townscape. The complex is reasonably intact, which in notable. Stylistically the design is in a classical Revival Style.
