Statement of Significance

Overseer's Cottage, Gorrinn Station, 9 miles south-south east, Ararat, is a single storied bluestone residence comprising part of the homestead complex of Gorrinn Station built for James and Robert Richardson. This structure dates from the 1850s or 1860s and is symmetrical with a hipped iron roof and eaves cornice with dentils. The timber verandah is supported on paired timber columns with arched infill, continued to form shaped valances.
Overseer's Cottage foms part of a complex of station buildings having historical associations with the settlement of the district, but is of primary importance architecturally for its unusually elaborate detailing. The eaves cornice, with dentils rather than brackets, is most unusual and distinctive. The timber verandah, while more typical in detailing, is elaborate and notable. Otherwise the residence is typical of its era.
Overseer's Cottageis very largely intact and in quite good condition.
