The former Union Bank was erected in 1889. The architects were Inskip and Robertson. The two storey brick structure has rendered facades which express the bank office proper from the attached former manager's residence, the latter displaying two tier arcade. The entrance to the bank to the splayed corner of the building is expressed by a pediment above the door and a decorative parapet feature. The firm Inskip and Robertson erected a number of branches for the Union Bank of which this is a notable and intact example. The decorative articulation is finely executed but somewhat subdued, particularly when compared with the firm's most notable work, the National Bank at Kew. The building is a fine feature of the Smith Streetscape.
