Statement of Significance
Royal Terrace, a row of ten terrace houses, was erected in 1855-57 to a design attributed to colonial artist John Gill, and is significant for architectural and historical reasons at the National level as the most important terrace in Melbourne.
Royal Terrace is a unique design, and completely intact. It is one of Melbourne's oldest, largest and best known terraces. The austere classical decoration, simple composition, and extensive use of bluestone epitomises early terrace house design in Melbourne. It is an outstanding feature of the Nicholson Street precinct, complementing the nationally significant Exhibition Buildings and gardens opposite.
Historically, it is notable for having been owned for just over a hundred years after its construction by the Bryant family, who also maintained a residence at No. 68. It has housed notable figures such as politician and three-times Premier John O 'Shanassy, and artist Nicholas Chevalier.
The flagstone paving of the footpath in front of the terraces, although modified over time, is important as one of the few remaining examples of this once common 19th Century paving in inner Melbourne. It was laid when the terraces were built, making it perhaps the oldest such example
