Statement of Significance

The present Napier Hotel at the corner of Napier and Moor Streets, Fitzroy was erected in 1916 for the Carlton and United Brewing Company and replaced an earlier hotel of the same name dating from 1866. The architects were Sydney Smith and Ogg who designed several buildings in a similar style during the early years of this century. The contractor was W B Cooper.
The facades of the two storey brick structure are identical and are joined at a splayed corner which rises to form a square hipped roof tower. The entrance to the public bar is situated on the splay and is articulated by a semi-circular broken pediment. Decorative roof gables express the side entrances. The facades are finished in exposed red brickwork and cream render. The tower portion of the ground floor is faced with green tiles.
The Napier Hotel is one of the finer and more intact Freestyle hotels in Melbourne. The corner tower, dutch style gables, decorative infill panels, balconettes, moss-green tiles and leadlight windows are important external features. The iron light brackets above each entrance are outstandingly decorative.
Apart from a multitude of external signs and minor internal works, the building has suffered little from modern renovations. This intactness both externally and internally is particularly noteworthy.
