The 1867 William Fox Villa is of local historical significance as one of the first houses built when the area was subdivided in 1863. Together with others, it frames the northwest entrance to the Darling Gardens.
The property gained local social significance from its development as Community Centre from 1974 when it was purchased by the adjoining Baptist Union. Known as 'The House of the Gentle Bunyip", it operted as a residential, ecumenical, Christian community embracing a variety of crisis support programs. The building is of social significance for there has been in recent years strong community support to retain it.
