Statement of Significance

The Fitzroy Engine House is historically and technologically significant at a local level.
Although it was the first example of the work of Alexander Davidson for the Melbourne Tramways Trust it has been completely altered internally and substantially externally. It was the second engine house built (1886) and was the first of a standardised design, having been developed from the experience gained with the engine house at No 1 Bridge Road, Richmond.
The building is the earliest remaining of the engine houses of Melbourne' s former cable tram system, the most extensive single cable tram system in the world. Refaced in about 1935, possibly to the design of Harry A Norris, it is a significant example of the simplified and restrained manner of the Moderne style.
