Statement of Significance

Designed by A Rogers and built in 1892 by Fraser & Wilson, this small unpretentious building had a large billiard room added to the rear in 1903.
The sides and rear are weather board with the attractive symetrical front elevation in simulated ashlar with round headed entrance door and windows. The entrance steps are not original and the roof parapet urns are missing.
The Mechanics' Institute and Free Library moved in the 1920s and the building was used as auction rooms, then a photography studio and art gallery and as a residence from 1967. Of considerable local historical and social interest.
