Statement of Significance

This organ is believed to be the only original example remaining of the work of William Stone who was an organ builder in St Kilda last century. The instrument was built in 1879 for the Congregational Church, Alma Road, St Kilda and was later moved to St John's Congregational Church, South St Kilda. In 1973, this organ was moved to The Avenue Uniting Church Blackburn, where it survives with little alteration. It retains its original action and pine casework which was stripped of its former varnished finish for its new location, and a spotted metal pipe front, which had been formerly gilded. It is one of the few 19th century organs to survive retaining its original cone-tuning and pitch; a rare example of indigenous 19th century organ building of fine sound and appearance.
