Statement of Significance

Homestead Statement of Significance: Point Cook Homestead, is a large, rambling bluestone house built in stages for pastorialist Thomas Chirnside, from probably 1850 onwards. Each wing dates from a different period. Single-storied, the homestead is constructed with bluestone walls, although some portions are timber, and slate roofs. There is a semi-enclosed verandah and on the parapet is the date 1857. There are various outbuildings. Point Cook Homestead is an important early homestead in Victoria, particularly by virtue of its setting on the edge of Port Phillip Bay. In a conservative classical style, the house is important architecturally for its early date, the stylistic evolution of its various stages and its detailing. Both the associated outbuildings and the landscaped setting considerably enhance the house, which has historical associations with the settlement of the surrounding area and the Chirnsides. Point Cook Homestead was purchased by the M.M.B.W. and has been restored as a museum house.

Stables Statement of Significance: The Stables, Point Cook Homestead, were erected prior to 1861 in proximity to the homestead. Constructed in random coursed bluestone with gabled ends and slate roofs, the stables are single storied with a loft above. Lean-to roofed wings extend to the rear at each end and a timber section infills between them. The building originally contained a coach room, saddle and groom's room, loose boxes and a hay loft. The stables are part of the complex of buildings comprising the Point Cooke homestead and are important as such. They are a surviving example of a substantial bluestone stable and are illustrative of vernacular construction techniques used in such buildings. Their form is largely typical but the lean-to extensions are unusual. The stables are in fair to good condition but a little deteriorated. Additions and alterations have been made.
