Thule was built approximately 1885 by Thomas Telford, who named the house after his property in New South Wales. The house has an interesting layout with the front room projecting at a 45 degree angle to the rest of the house. There are delicate leadlight windows on the northern side of the entrance which is elaboratd by pilasters and an entabulature. The novelist, Henry Hnadel Richardson stayed at Thule in her youth as she was a friend of Telford's daughter, Janette. Richardson's novel 'Ultima Thule' refers to the house but also to the original meaning of the phrase, a medieval phrase for a mythic island across the sea.
