Statement of Significance

Dorset Terrace, a group of three brick and stucco terrace houses at 17-21 St Vincent Place South, Albert Park, was built in 1871-2 as an investment for Charles Skeats, iron monger and timber merchant. The nine room classical revival style house row, enhanced with elaborate stucco mouldings, circular balustrade parapets, composite timber and cast iron verandahs and iron palisade fence is of unknown design origin.
Dorset Terrace is part of an identifiable streetscape and with the adjacent Rochester Terrace, establishes the special aesthetic and townscape quality of St Vincent Place South. The terrace house group was occupied by several notable tenants in the 19th century, including H B Moore, assistant surveyor general and distinguished public figure. The terrace is an outstanding example of pre-boom style terrace architecture of the 1870s.
The facade of Dorset Terrace is intact although inappropriately painted white. The interiors have been sensitively adapted, with the essential Victorian character of the principal rooms preserved.
