The Ghost Train in Luna Park, St Kilda is of national significance as one of the few remaining early structures in Australia's most famous operating amusement park. The original "Pretzel" dark ride was acquired from the hugely successful Pretzel Amusement Ride Company, based in New Jersey in the United States, and was installed in 1934. The rides were incredibly popular and sold to foreign amusement parks such as Luna Park Paris and Blackpool's Pleasure Beach. The current Ghost Train appears to be only slightly altered, incorporating much of the visible structure, layout and equipment of this original installation. It is unique as the only Australian example of this internationally famous attraction. The exterior of the Ghost Train enclosure is notable for its distinctive 30s Art Deco style which has been maintained through years of remodelling and change. The cars, in the shape of small steam trains, date from at least the 1950s.
