Statement of Significance

The Carousel at Luna Park, St Kilda, is the largest and most ornate of such structures in the country and the only one to retain an early enclosure; it is of National significance. The Carousel is a unique Edwardian creation, featuring particularly lively carved horses and two chariots, a highly decorative centre-piece and outer frieze featuring "fine art" painted scenes, together with a wealth of carved swags, rococco framing, cupids and special lighting.
The design of carousels reached a zenith in the early decades of this century in the United States. One of the largest companies supplying this market was the Philladelphia Toboggan Company, which constructed the Luna Park Carousel (No 30) in 1913. It is one of their largest and most luxurious models, the only one made for export and the only American Carousel in Australia .The Carousel has been the centrepiece of Luna Park (St Kilda) since 1924, and the present Canopy structure was built at this time. The Carousel, and its Canopy, is a landmark within the Park and enhances the significance of Australia's oldest and most unique amusement park. The Canopy is significant in its own right as one of the few remaining early structures within the Park. The Carousel, like Luna Park, has been enjoyed by at least three generations, and is etched in the memories of many Melbournians.
