The Prince of Wales Hotel, St. Kilda, designed by the prolific hotel architect R H McIntyre, and completed in early 1937 is of architectural and social significance at the Regional level. It is amongst the largest and most architecturally notable hotels remaining in Victoria built in the moderne style, of which it is a stylish though not innovative example. Socially, it was one of the premier hotels in Melbourne until the mid 1950s, attracting the 'smart set' and it also became a major venue for the alternative music scene in the late 1970s, a role which it fulfilled up to August 1996. It is also significant as one of a number of larger hotels in Fitzroy Street, St.Kilda, which together provided the sea-side suburb with the largest concentration of hotels outside the central city, enhancing St. Kilda's resort character, and providing for its notably itinerant population. The etched-glass windows at first floor level, featuring the triple feathers motif which is the symbol of the Prince of Wales, with moderne edging, were created by noted theatre designer Loudon Sainthill, and are also individual interest.
