Statement of Significance

Original Front Portion of the Building Only (10m depth approx)
Statement of Significance: The remaining portion of the Majestic Hotel contains some of the earliest purpose-built, self-contained flats in Melbourne. Built in 1912 to the design of its owner, R J Daley, it was formerly part of a larger combined flats/boarding house development. While the plan is indicative of a hotel, the details and operation of the original institution (the "Majestic Flats") were more those of a superior boarding house, a rare building type. The interior of the flats retains some Edwardian features, while the former lobby and ground floor reception rooms were altered in a renovation in 1935, which also changed the character of the facade. The remaining portion of the Majestic is also important locally for demonstrating the popularity, and large-scale residential character of Fitzroy Street in the first half of the twentieth century. The rear wings were demolished in 1991.
