Statement of Significance

Duncraig, a house built c.1856 for the pharmacist Daniel Rutter Long and his family, was sucessfully transformed inside and out by the eminent society architect, Walter Butler, for his own use which extended over a period (c.1897-1907) when many of his important designs and his only two publications were created. Duncraig, with its distinctive Freestyle parapets, British colonial timber detailing, "open-plan" internal circulation plus internal finishes and detailing, was the prototype for later Butler designs, one of the most successful being Thanes, in Kooyong. The house is the focus of a vista down Avalon Road, a residential subdivision aparently created by Butler during his occupation. Traces are sitll visible of the building occupied by The Rutter Long family for forty years. These add a further historical perspective to the house, given the prominence held by Long in the pharmacy profession, both in Victoria and in Great Britian.
