Statement of Significance

One of the first Wesleyan churches in Victoria in the Gothic style (contemporary with Joseph Reed's church in Lonsdale Street), built in 1857-8 to the design of David Ross. It is a particularly English looking building with an axial West tower designed to contain a clock and to be crowned by four pinnacles (which, if ever built, are now lacking). While the openings are of Early English form there is Perpendicular tracery in three West windows, and matching panelling in the doors. These characteristics, together with the low pitched roof, distinguish the building absolutely from the standard Wesleyan type subsequently evolved by Crouch & Wilson.
