Carmyle was erected in 1879 for prominent Scottish pastoralist, stock-agent and government land tax commissioner, Archibald Fisken. He wasa noted pioneer pastoralist, stock agent and public identity but occupied it for only 7 years (1879-1886).
The 20 room two storey brick and stucco mansion, probably designed by noted Melbourne architect Francis Maloney White in the conservative Italianate tradition was acquired by Colin Simson, a retired western district pastoralist in 1886.
The building is of local architectural interest.
Carmyle has been restored as a private mansion house and was used for a time as medical consulting rooms on a reduced site at Toorak. The building fabric is well maintained and appreciably intact externally, although enhanced internally.
