Statement of Significance

This is an important example of bank architecture in the Renaissance Revival style and an intact example of the work of outstanding early Melbourne architect Leonard Terry. The building dates from 1874 when it was constructed for the National Bank; additions (to the south end) were made in 1889 (architect G Jobbins). The fine architectural mouldings including the dentilated cornice and window surrounds; the wrought iron window railings and the massive front door are particularly notable.
