Statement of Significance

AHC Statement of Significance
Sweeney's, originally Culla Hill, comprises a former homestead, located on a site bought from the crown in 1842 by Irishman Thomas Sweeney. The original slab dwelling was demolished in recent times. The barn, constructed of locally quarried stone remains. The present house is constructed of brick and had a slate roof. The hipped roof is continuous and forms a verandah, supported on timber posts.
Sweeney's, is of prime importance as the home of one of the very first settlers in the Eltham district. The site of Sweeney's has been lived on since 1842. The original dwelling has been demolished, but the second house and the barn, both of unknown dates, remain, albeit in altered states. The cottage is important in the history of Eltham and of architectural interest as an example of a Colonial Style dwelling, characterised by the hipped roof continuing over the verandah.
Sweeney's has been extensively altered internally and to a lesser extent externally.
Of local significance.
