Statement of Significance
Marathon, the residence erected in 1914 and extended in 1924, the garden presumed to date from c.1914-24, is of National significance; Garden significance:
- as one of a small group of summer residences erected in the first decades of the twentieth century and set in extensive grounds along the Peninsula coastline in the Mornington, Sorrento, Portsea and Mount Eliza area, each providing a context for the increasing subdivision around them;
- architecturally, as a large summer residence designed as extensive renovations and additions by the noted architectural firm Walter & Richard Butler from an original concept designed by Butler & Bradshaw in 1914 ( Walter Butler's earlier firm); it was notable for its use af natural materials in the Arts & Crafts manner so respected by Walter Butler;
- as the summer residence of members of the Grimwade family, prominent in Melbourne social, commercial and intellectual circles; and also as a companion to Russell Grimwade's Westerfield and the earlier Peninsula Grimwade family home at Coolart;
- for its retention of planting from the period after 1914; this includes mature trees (especially conifers), shrubs, herbaceous perennials and aquatic plants;
- for its retention of design elements from the period after 1914-1924; including terraces, balustrading, steps , pools, pergolas, vistas within the garden and to distant views, characteristic formal Italian planting (such as cypresses and clipped hedges), and architectural elements (such as fountains and statuary); as an Italian influenced landscape design this property is one of few in the State;
- for its considerable aesthetic appeal, derived from its dramatic seaside and clifftop setting, the sloping terraced site, the complementary architectural and garden elements, and the mature planting.
