Statement of Significance

Brunswick Town Hall and Muncipal Offices complex is a French Renaissance revival design of Evander McIvor (1877) and Sydney H Wilson (1908), with Moderne additions by Wilson and Charles R Heath (1926) and remodelled (1937), by Peck and Kemter.
The 1877 and 1908 work is architecturally of State significance as one of a group of French Renaissance revival town halls characteristic of Melbourne. The complementary 1926 and 1937 work with its interiors is equally significant as one of a group of Moderne municipal buildings and interiors. At Brunswick, this Moderne work is intact, particularly the concealed cove lighting, proscenium modelling and details such as the wall clock and joinery veneers.
The complex is locally significant (with Christ Church, Glenlyon Road and the former Mechanics' Institute) as a significant streetscape and visual focus of the municipality. The Town Hall is visibly the grandest building in the Sydney Road approach to Melbourne.
The complex is historically and socially significant to Brunswick as an expression of the social and civic aspirations of the city since the 1870's.
