Statement of Significance

St John's Anglican Church, with a nave by the architect William Barker from 1892, and Chancel, Sanctuary, Vestry and Bell tower added in 1935 to the design of G Smith, is of Local architectural and historical significance.
Historically, the Church is important as the focus for the Anglican community in the Flinders area since 1892.
Architecturally and aesthetically, the Church is mainly of interest for the additions of 1935, which give the former simple brick gabled Gothic structure an Arts & Crafts quality, as displayed by the bell-cast off-centre bell tower, with its shingled roof, and the complex massing of the projecting transepts and sanctuary. The interior is also of note, the use of fluted culumn-like pillars, and the double arches of the Chancel, with the one to the Sanctuary being lower and flatter, are unusual. The exposed timber trussed and lined roof, pews, and delicate carved woodwork fittings and furniture are finely detailed, and intact.
The Church is also a landmark in the area.
