Statement of Significance

An externally intact two-storey brick house, constructed in 1889. It was built in cavity brickwork decorated with Bichromatic bricks and a moulded brick string course at first floor level. The design gives equal emphasis to both the south and east facades, with a projecting gable unit at the extreme of each. A fine cast-iron decorated verandah returns around the south-east corner.
The house retains its original service rooms, stable block/coach house and curtilage. The roof has been covered with tiles. From 1909 this building was used as a residence for the superintendents of the Mount Royal Home for the Aged, and among its medical occupants was Dr John Cade, the discoverer of lithium as a specific in the treatment of schizophrenia.
