Statement of Significance

An early timber cottage, of local architectural and historical significance. Hasting's Cottage appears to have been constructed in c.1873 and extended in c.1881 by William Hastings, a resident of the Warrandyte area since the mid 1860s and thought to have been a miner on the Anderson's Creek gold diggings. The cottage continued to be occupied after Hastings' death in 1892 by his daughter and son-in-law for much of the twentieth century and remained in continuous family ownership until sold in September 1995.
Apart from relatively minor twentieth century additions, the cottage remains substantially intact and is a rare surviving example of a once typical building type in the Warrandyte area. Notable features include the six-paned sash windows, the panelled front door and boarded internal and rear doors, the beaded board linings to the internal walls and ceilings and the timber mantlepiece.
