The Chelsea Court House is of regional architectural and historical importance as an intact and modest example of the contemporary English Neo-Baroque similar to that employed by English architect Edwin Lutyens and applied to the design of contemporary buildings constructed in the late 1920s which departed from traditional models.
Built in 1828-29, under the supervision of E. Evan Smith, Chief Architect of the Public Works Department, the Chelsea Court House is an outstanding example of the scale and flair of an asymmetrical design derived from functional requirements. The whole of the building retains a high degree of integrity which extends to the original court house furniture and intact fixtures and fittings. The building is therefore also historically important for the interpretation it offers of court house procedures in the interwar period.
