Statement of Significance

Oak Park, formerly Pascoe Vale Farm, was purchased by pioneer colonist John Pascoe Fawkner on 1st August 1839. Soon afterwards Fawkner erected a substantial timber house and outbuildings and developed an extensive diversified farm. The present single storey brick house replaces the original farmhouse at an unknown date and the Italianate two storey brick additions were erected in the 1880's for J English.
John Pascoe Fawkner, pioneer, publisher, politician, self-less patriot and co-founder of Melbourne, lived at his Pascoe Vale farm for 14 years, this property being the only asset he retained following insolvency in 1843-45. Although undocumented, the single storey brick wing of Oak Park is held to be part of Fawkner's establishment. Nothing survives of the original timber building. The existing complexes are of negligible architectural importance, the significance of this property lying in the site associations with Fawkner.
Oak Park at 11 Marie Street, Oak Park, has been substantially defaced, the single storey brick wing being completely modernised. The complex is of extremely low integrity and used as a religious centre.
