Statement of Significance

The tram shelter, designed by G Monsborough for the M&MTB, and built in 1933, is of State social, historic and aesthetic significance.
Socially and historically, these shelters are part of a group of 16 early tram shelters that survive in inner city and the middle ring suburbs, that are together considered the most important and enjoyed items of historic street furniture in Melbourne. They are widely regarded as an essential part of the character of Melbourne as a 'tram city', and important historic elements of the tram system.
Aesthetically, it is a charming picturesque pavilion. Displaying an Arts & Crafts influence, notable details include the slate roof, shingled gables, decorative brick base, paired corner columns, and particularly the curved brackets.
Historically, the shelter is of interest for having been erected soon after the electrification and extension of the tram lines it serves.
Socially, it is important as one of the early tram shelters, which are probably the most well-liked items of street furniture in Melbourne (particularly the St. Kilda Road examples). They are widely regarded as a charming part of our tram system and part of the character of Melbourne. They have provided shelter to many commuters, and provided delight to passers-by over many years.
