Statement of Significance: The former East Collingwood Rifles Orderly Room, constructed in 1864 and added to c.1891 and 1937, is of historical and architectural significance at the State level.
It is of historical significance as the earliest section of the building is the oldest surviving drill hall in Victoria. Along with the Richmond Drill Hall, it is the only surviving building of the early volunteer era of the Victorian defence forces. Its continual use for defence traning purposes up until recent years adds to its significance, and is reflected in the various additions.
Architecturally, it is notable as a large and fairly elaborate 19th century timber building, and for the characteristic window details, found on the small number of other 19th century drill halls.
