Statement of Significance

Built in 1890 to the design of the prominent architectural firm, Charles Webb & Son, Melrose is architecturally and historically significant at a regional level beause of its association with Charles Webb as a speculator and early land owner in the area, also as one of a small number of known surviving suburban villas designed by Webb. It is an indicator of Webb's approach to outer-urban residential sites.
Melrose is also architecturally notable as a full development of the verandahed Italianate style which was characterized in its earlier British development by the same type of hipped-roof towers seen at Melrose. It is distinctive as one of the early large houses, once set in grounds, in what is now a densely developed suburb, and it possesses notable cast-iron ornament.
