This large building consists of a train hall formed by three gable roofs with a two storey office block and clock tower at the south-east corner. It was built by A P Tozer & Co in 1889 and altered during the early years of this century. In spite of further changes made over the years, it is substantially intact and remains in use for its original purpose.
Important features include the carefully detailed south facade which reflects the shape of the building behind and consists of a segmental arch in the central section, over the running lines, and a two storey office building dominated by the clock tower above. The dark brown body bricks are relieved by reds and stone dressings. The VR insignia and crown decorate the south face whilst the construction date is recorded within the tympanum of a large pediment on the east elevation.
The scale of this building and its Mansart roofed tower are symbolic of the importance of the Railways Department during the late Victorian era. Its design is unique, for it combines an office complex and goods shed into the one structure whilst the application of the 'train hall' concept to a goods shed is without precedent in Victoria.
