The Grand Union Tramway Junction is of National significance as the only remaining example of its type. It is the most complex junction that can be established at a crossroads, involving turns in all four directions. First established in December 1913 by the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust, it recalls the early days of the tram system when routes were developing and special services, such as from Caulfield race days, were common. Only three other 'grand union' junctions are known to have existed in Australia and these were all in Adelaide.
